What Watch Does Elon Musk Wear? Usually None, Plus the Reported Exceptions

Elon Musk is rarely photographed wearing a watch, and there is no confirmed signature piece. The watch most often linked to him is the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph (ref. CAR2015.FC6321), but that connection is reported, not proven, and the best-documented sighting is an early-2000s Rolex Datejust.

Quick answer Musk usually wears no watch at all. Commentators most often name the 2012 TAG Heuer Carrera SpaceX limited edition as his, and a 2004 photo appears to show a steel Rolex Datejust, reported as ref. 16200. Other Richard Mille, Omega and Audemars Piguet claims are unconfirmed.

The Reported Favorite: TAG Heuer Carrera SpaceX Chronograph

TAG Heuer launched the Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph in 2012, limited to 2,012 pieces. It has a white dial, rocket imagery on the dial and caseback, and a SpaceX logo and rocket on the tinted sapphire caseback window. aBlogtoWatch linked it to the 50th anniversary of the first Swiss watch in space, which was worn by John Glenn (see What Watch Did John Glenn Wear?).

Several watch sites, including Wrist Enthusiast and DMARGE, say it is rumored or reported to be Musk’s favorite. We have found no photograph, interview or company statement that confirms he wears it, so it should be treated as a popular attribution.

Why the SpaceX Carrera Exists

The 2012 edition was designed as a space-themed Carrera, with a white dial, blued steel hands and rocket artwork, and it was due to reach stores around November 2012. aBlogtoWatch noted that its Calibre 1887 is described as an in-house movement based on a modified high-end Seiko automatic chronograph caliber, a detail some collectors do not know. The same review points to earlier TAG Heuer projects with Musk’s companies, including Tesla, which is part of why the two names keep being linked.

The watch is a good example of how a brand tie-in can turn into a rumor. A product that carries SpaceX branding is easy to attach to the company’s founder, even when there is no evidence he ever wore one. That is why we separate “made for SpaceX” from “worn by Musk” throughout this article.

The Rolex Datejust Seen in 2004

The clearest photo evidence comes from March 19, 2004, when a Los Angeles photograph showed a 33-year-old Musk, around the time Tesla was founded, wearing what appears to be a stainless steel Rolex Datejust. Webchronos judged it to be reference 16200, which Rolex made from about 1988 to 2006 with the Calibre 3135 movement.

That identification comes from the bracelet, indexes and bezel in a close-up, and it is hedged: the article says “appears to be.” Wrist Enthusiast also reports a roughly 2004 sighting of a 36 mm Datejust, possibly ref. 16200, but notes that Musk is rarely seen with a watch now and doubts he wears it today.

If you like Rolex stories about powerful people, compare it with Warren Buffett’s Day-Date and Donald Trump’s Rolexes, both better documented than Musk’s.

Richard Mille, Omega and Other Reported Watches

Wrist Enthusiast reports at least one photograph of Musk in what looks like a high-end Richard Mille, which the author thinks is an RM005 or RM029 but admits could be a Franck Muller, a brand that makes similar tonneau cases. It leaves the identification to the reader, so we do too.

The same article says he was earlier seen in what appears to be an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. Some retailer blogs also claim an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, but those lists cite no photos or dates, so we do not count them as confirmed.

The honest summary is that Musk’s wrist is usually empty. DMARGE says he “normally doesn’t wear a watch,” and Wrist Enthusiast describes him as often not wearing one at all. That is a description, not a quote from him: we could not find a primary-source interview in which Musk says he doesn’t wear a watch, so we are not attributing one.

How to Read Celebrity Watch Lists About Musk

Most “Elon Musk watch collection” pages are written by retailers, and many repeat each other without dates, photographs or events. A trustworthy attribution has at least one of three things: a dated photograph, a statement from the person, or an auction or brand record naming him.

By that test, Musk’s list is short. A 2004 photograph supports the Rolex Datejust, and everything else rests on assertions. If you see a page that names a specific reference number for a watch on his wrist, ask where the photo is.

What We Can and Cannot Confirm

Because the web is full of confident “Elon Musk watch collection” lists, here is where our evidence stands.

  • Documented by a photo (hedged ID): a steel Rolex Datejust in 2004, reported as ref. 16200.
  • Reported by several sites, no direct proof: TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph.
  • Single-photo or retailer claims: Richard Mille (RM005 or RM029, or a Franck Muller), Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.
  • Not found: a current, confirmed daily watch, or any brand ambassador agreement.

As of 2026 we know of no watch brand that names Musk as an ambassador. The SpaceX edition was a company-linked limited edition, which is a very different thing from an endorsement.

Affordable Alternatives to the Musk-Linked Watches

If you want the SpaceX look, any white-dial steel chronograph with a clean layout gets close. The current TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph is the direct family, while the Tissot PRX Chronograph and the Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph give the same racing-inspired feel for less.

For a tech-leader approach to watches, our article on Bill Gates’s $70 Casio shows the opposite extreme from a Richard Mille. A mid-priced steel watch sits happily in between.

FAQ

What watch does Elon Musk wear?

He is usually seen without one. The watches most often attributed to him are the TAG Heuer Carrera SpaceX Chronograph and a Rolex Datejust photographed in 2004, but none is confirmed as a current daily watch.

Does Elon Musk wear a watch?

Rarely. Wrist Enthusiast and DMARGE both describe him as often not wearing one, though neither cites a direct quote from Musk saying so.

What Rolex does Elon Musk wear?

A 2004 photograph appears to show him in a steel Rolex Datejust, identified by Webchronos as reference 16200. The identification is an informed guess, and he does not appear to be a regular Rolex wearer.

Does Elon Musk wear a Richard Mille?

He has reportedly been photographed at least once in a Richard Mille, thought to be an RM005 or RM029, though it could be a Franck Muller. We could not confirm the model.

Is Elon Musk a TAG Heuer ambassador?

We found no evidence that he is. TAG Heuer made a SpaceX limited edition in 2012, and aBlogtoWatch noted it had worked with Musk’s companies before, but that is not an ambassador role.
