Casio AE-1200 ‘Casio Royale’ Review: The Cheap Watch With a Bond Nickname

Featured image: Casio

The Casio AE-1200WH, nicknamed the “Casio Royale,” is a resin-cased digital world time watch with a small analog-style display, a world map dial and a 10-year battery, usually sold for around $30 to $45.

Quick answer The AE-1200WH is Casio’s budget world time watch: 100 m water resistance, five alarms, 4-city world time and a CR2025 battery rated at about 10 years. The “Casio Royale” name is a fan nickname, not a Casio product name. It comes from the watch’s resemblance to the Seiko G757 Sports 100 that Roger Moore’s James Bond wore in Octopussy (1983). This Casio has not been confirmed in any Bond film. The plain resin model is the best value; the steel-bracelet AE-1200WHD costs a little more.

What the Casio AE-1200WH is

The AE-1200WH is part of Casio’s standard digital line. Its face is dominated by a world map, with an LCD display and a small analog-style time counter in the top left. Press a button and the map highlights the zone for the city you select.

Casio’s own spec page lists 31 time zones (48 cities plus UTC), a four-city display, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a countdown timer, five alarms and an auto-calendar through 2099. It is widely reported to have launched in 2012, though Casio does not publish a launch date on its product pages.

The reference you will see most often is AE-1200WH-1AV. Reviewers, including HiConsumption, treat it as a travel watch, a first “real” watch or a beater to keep beside a more expensive piece.

Why it is called the “Casio Royale”

The nickname is a pun on Casino Royale, and it does not come from Casio. HiConsumption states plainly that it has “absolutely nothing to do with” Casio’s own marketing. Several reviewers trace it to the Seiko G757 Sports 100, the world time digital watch Q hands to Bond in Octopussy, which shares the same radar-style display, bevelled black bezel and raised button guards. The Time Bum adds a useful caveat: it “isn’t that same watch, and the movie wasn’t Casino Royale.”

Nobody seems to know who first used the name. CROWN Singapore’s blog says no one can definitively pin down who first christened it, only that it spread through an online cult following. The Seiko original is long discontinued, so the Casio has become the cheap stand-in for the look. You can read how the Seiko was used on screen in What Watch Did James Bond Wear in Octopussy? and find the rest of the franchise on our James Bond watches hub.

One point that trips people up: the actual Casino Royale (2006) Bond watch was an Omega, not a Casio. Our Casino Royale watch guide covers it.

Which AE-1200 version should you buy?

The AE-1200 family is large and the codes are confusing. Based on Casio’s listings and the reviews cited below, these are the variants that matter:

Casio AE-1200WHD-1AV world time watch on a stainless steel bracelet
The AE-1200WHD-1AV swaps the resin strap for a stainless steel bracelet. Image: Casio
  • AE-1200WH-1A / -1AV: the standard black resin model, and the cheapest at roughly $30.
  • AE-1200WH-1B / -1BV: a tan or green-map screen variant, per Teddy Baldassarre’s review.
  • AE-1200WH-1C, -5A and other colors: silver and brown cases on resin straps.
  • AE-1200WHB (cloth strap): the same 45 x 42.1 x 12.5 mm case on a cloth band, a little pricier.
  • AE-1200WHD-1A (steel bracelet): a stainless steel bracelet with a triple-fold clasp. Casio lists it at 91 g, far heavier than the 39 g resin model.
  • AE-1200WHL (leather): a leather strap version, about $50 per the Baldassarre review.

If you only want the original look, buy the black -1A. If you want to dress it up, the steel bracelet is the only version that changes how the watch feels, and the resin versions are easy to swap onto aftermarket straps because they use ordinary 18 mm lugs.

AE-1200 versus AE-1300 and AE-1500

The siblings are easy to confuse. The AE-1300WH shares the same 45 x 42.1 x 12.5 mm case and 100 m rating per Casio’s listing, but swaps the feature set (29 time zones, an interval timer with nine presets). The AE-1500WH is a much bigger watch at 54.4 x 51.2 x 15.7 mm and 57 g, runs on a CR2032 and offers dual time rather than the four-city display. For the Royale look, stay with the AE-1200.

What the AE-1200 does well

The strongest point is value. Casio’s page gives you world time, five alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, an auto-calendar through 2099, an LED light and a 100 m rating for the price of a restaurant meal. Teddy Baldassarre’s review jokes that it costs less than a three-pack of socks.

The 10-year battery claim is Casio’s own rating, so treat it as a ceiling, not a promise. In practice it means you will not be changing batteries often. The 39 g weight is also a plus on a long flight or at a desk.

The world map is the real feature. The Time Bum calls it the watch’s “defining feature,” and Casio’s four-city display lets you keep home time and two or three destinations visible together.

Trade-offs and drawbacks

This is a $30 resin watch, and reviewers say so. HiConsumption lists the resin case that “feels cheap,” a scratch-prone crystal and a busy dial. The Time Bum criticizes the mold parting line around the mid-case and warns that the colored coating on the resin case will not weather scratches without wearing off.

The analog-style hands are small and hard to read at a glance, and the amber light needs a button press. The 45 mm length and 12.5 mm thickness are also chunky for a digital Casio; the F-91W is 8.5 mm thick.

Also note that 100 m is a rating suited to swimming and showers, not a dive watch. For a clear explanation of what that means in practice, see our guide to water resistant versus waterproof watches.

Who wears the Casio AE-1200?

We could not find a confirmed celebrity, athlete or politician who wears the AE-1200 as a signature watch, and we will not guess. What the sources do support is the kind of buyer: travelers who want world time without a phone, students, and collectors who keep one in rotation beside pricier watches. HiConsumption notes that owners of Rolex, Omega and Tudor watches use one as a daily beater.

On screen, the one documented appearance is a reported one. G-Central noted that a young Jamie Dutton wore a Casio AE-1200W upside down on his right wrist in a flashback in Yellowstone season 3, episode 5, and questioned whether the watch, released in 2012, belonged in that timeline. Treat that as a curiosity, not a product placement claim.

The Casio F-91W is the minimalist choice: lighter and cheaper, with a daily alarm and stopwatch but no world time. Choose it if you want something nearly weightless and do not care about the map.

The Casio A168WA has the same basic functions on a stainless steel bracelet with a retro look, per Casio’s spec page. Choose it for a dressier digital.

The G-Shock DW-5600UE is the tougher pick: 200 m water resistance, mineral glass and shock resistance per Casio, though with a shorter 5-year battery and no world time. FAQ

Why is the Casio AE-1200 called the Casio Royale?

It is a fan nickname that puns on Casino Royale and refers to the AE-1200’s resemblance to the Seiko G757 Sports 100 that Roger Moore’s Bond wore in Octopussy. Casio does not use the name, and no source we found confirms the AE-1200 appearing in a Bond film.

Is the Casio AE-1200 waterproof?

Casio rates the AE-1200WH at 100 m (10 bar) water resistance, which suits swimming and showering. It is not a dive watch, and “waterproof” is not a term Casio uses for it.

How long does the Casio AE-1200 battery last?

Casio lists the CR2025 battery at about 10 years under normal use. Real life depends on how often you use the light, alarms and stopwatch.

How much does the Casio AE-1200WH cost?

The resin-strap models run about $30 at typical retailers, with cloth and steel bracelet versions around $40 to $45 and the leather version around $50. Prices change with seller and region.

What is the difference between the AE-1200WH and the AE-1200WHD?

The WHD has a stainless steel bracelet with a triple-fold clasp instead of a resin strap. Casio lists it at 91 g, versus 39 g for the resin version, and the case measures the same.

Does the Casio AE-1200 have a world map?

Yes. The dial carries a world map that highlights the selected zone, with 31 time zones, 48 cities plus UTC and four cities displayed at once.
