Terry Crews has been photographed in public wearing a Rolex Sky-Dweller, reference 336935, in 18k Everose gold with a chocolate brown dial. His Brooklyn Nine-Nine character, Sergeant Terry Jeffords, does not have a publicly documented signature watch; we could not find a reliable source naming the watch that the character wears on screen.

Quick answerOff screen, Terry Crews wore a Rolex Sky-Dweller ref. 336935 (42 mm, Everose gold, chocolate dial), according to Robb Report. On Brooklyn Nine-Nine, no specific watch has been confirmed for Terry Jeffords, so the best “show” match is a simple, dependable police-style watch.

The real-life watch: Rolex Sky-Dweller 336935

Robb Report’s weekly watch roundup spotted Crews at a Formula One team livery reveal in February 2024 wearing the Sky-Dweller in Everose gold. The 336935 was introduced in 2023, so he was wearing a very recent release. The chocolate dial is the signature touch, giving the watch a warm, rich look that suits Crews’ larger-than-life style.

The Sky-Dweller is one of Rolex’s most complicated watches. It combines a second time zone (GMT) display with an annual calendar, and it uses Rolex’s Ring Command bezel to set the functions. Rolex’s 42 mm case is large, and in precious metal it sits very high in the price range.

What does Terry Jeffords wear on Brooklyn Nine-Nine?

Terry Jeffords is the squad’s dependable sergeant, a muscular family man who loves his wife and daughters and his yogurt. His wardrobe is mostly plain: a uniform or office clothes, and a watch is rarely a plot point. We searched for a costume or prop credit that names his watch and found none, so we won’t guess a brand. If you have seen a credible identification, send it along and we will update this page.

That said, it is easy to describe what the character would plausibly wear. A sergeant is a practical man, and a practical police officer’s watch is typically a rugged analog or digital model with a clear dial and a strong strap. If the Sky-Dweller is out of reach, these real, currently sold watches give you big-case presence, a GMT or complication, or a rich brown dial. Prices are approximate USD.

  • Seiko 5 Sports GMT (SSK series, about $450 to $500): Best for a true dual-time watch on a budget. Pro: automatic GMT movement for a low price. Con: a sporty rather than dressy look.
  • Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 (about $700 to $800): Best for an integrated-bracelet style watch. Pro: Swiss-made with an 80-hour power reserve. Con: no GMT.
  • Orient Bambino with a brown dial (about $150 to $250): Best for the chocolate dial look. Pro: inexpensive automatic. Con: smaller and dressier.
  • Casio G-Shock GW-M5610 (about $100 to $140): Best for a tough, real-world cop-style watch. Pro: solar and radio-controlled. Con: not a luxury look.

Terry Crews and watches

Crews, a former NFL player turned actor, entertainer and artist, does not have a long public watch-collecting track record, so the Sky-Dweller sighting is one data point rather than a full collection. It fits the sort of bold, personality-forward accessory he often chooses, but one photo does not tell us everything about his taste.

How the Sky-Dweller actually works

The Sky-Dweller arrived at Baselworld in 2012 and, according to SJX, it was Rolex’s most complicated wristwatch at launch and still is. It does two jobs at once: it shows a second time zone, and it keeps an annual calendar that knows which months have 30 days and which have 31.

That calendar is called Saros, after the astronomical cycle in which the Sun, Earth and Moon line up for eclipses. The name refers to the planetary gearing underneath. At the end of a 30-day month, the date jumps straight to the 1st, so you only correct it once a year, at the end of February.

The first watches used calibre 9001. The current generation, including Terry Crews’ ref. 336935, uses its successor, calibre 9002.

The Ring Command bezel

The fluted bezel isn’t decoration. It is a selector, first used on the Yacht-Master II in 2007. With the crown unscrewed and pulled out, turning the bezel changes what the crown adjusts:

  • Fully counterclockwise: set the time, including the 24-hour home-time disc.
  • First click clockwise: move local time in one-hour jumps, handy when you land in another time zone.
  • Second click: set the date and month.
  • Third click: neutral; the crown only winds the watch.

How to spot a Sky-Dweller in photos

From across a red carpet, a Sky-Dweller can pass for a Day-Date or a Datejust. Three details give it away.

  • Twelve small windows around the edge of the dial. One sits beside each hour marker, and the current month shows as a colored patch in one of them. In Crews’ February 2024 photos, that patch would sit near the 2 o’clock marker.
  • An off-center disc. A rotating 24-hour ring sits in the middle of the dial, with a red or contrasting triangle pointing at home time.
  • Size and bezel. At 42 mm with a tall fluted bezel, it looks noticeably bigger than a 36 or 40 mm Day-Date.

Rolex’s other famous gold watch is the Day-Date, worn on screen by Tony Soprano, and Grant Cardone is another public figure with a Rolex habit worth comparing.
