Garmin vs Apple Watch: Which Do Athletes Actually Wear in 2026?

Featured image: Apple

For serious training and multi-day battery life, the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro and Forerunner 970 beat the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Series 12, while the Apple watches win as everyday smartwatches. Based on Apple’s and Garmin’s own specs and 2026 reviews, that split decides almost every Garmin vs Apple Watch choice.

Quick answer Buy Garmin if you train for races, run ultras, hike for days or want data that goes deep (recovery, training load, race predictions). Buy Apple if you own an iPhone and want one watch that handles messages, payments and Siri as well as workouts. Among athletes, Garmin has far more documented sponsorships; Apple’s best-known pro-sport tie-in is the World Surf League. We have not tested these watches ourselves.

Garmin vs Apple Watch at a Glance

As of 23 October 2026, Apple’s current lineup is the Apple Watch Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3. Garmin’s flagship is the Fenix 9 family, announced in August 2026, alongside the Forerunner 970 and 570 (both from May 2025), the Venu 4 and the Instinct 3. Prices below are US list prices and street prices vary.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 against Garmin Fenix 9 Pro is the cleanest rivalry: both are titanium, sapphire-glass, dive-rated adventure watches with LTE and satellite options. The Series 12 against the Forerunner 570 and 970 is the everyday-athlete matchup.

Garmin’s Venu 4 (about $550 at launch, up to 12 days of battery, no LTE) and Instinct 3 (our Instinct 3 guide covers who wears it) sit below these. Apple’s SE 3 launched at $249 and drops ECG and some health sensors. Garmin’s own pages are the final word on specs; see our Garmin and Apple hubs.

Battery Life: Garmin Wins by a Wide Margin

This is the clearest gap. Apple rates the Ultra 4 at up to 50 hours of normal use and 84 hours in Low Power Mode, with up to 18 hours of tracked workout time. The Series 12 manages up to 24 hours, or about 10 hours of outdoor workout.

Garmin’s Fenix 9 Pro, per Tom’s Guide, runs up to 10, 18 or 31 days in smartwatch mode on the 43mm, 47mm and 51mm sizes, and up to 56 hours of multi-band GPS on the 51mm. Even the cheaper Forerunner 570 is rated around 10 to 11 days. A marathon test in 2025 found the Ultra 3 lasted a three-day trip but Garmin’s Fenix 8 Pro used far less charge during the race itself.

For a weekend of hiking, a 100-mile race or simply never thinking about a charger, Garmin is the safer pick. For a daily-charge routine, it matters less.

GPS and Tracking Accuracy

Both brands now offer multi-band positioning on their top models. Apple lists dual-frequency L1 + L5 GPS on the Ultra only; the Series 12 and SE 3 use single-frequency GPS. Garmin offers multi-band GNSS on the Fenix, Forerunner 570 and 970, and Venu 4.

Real-world accuracy is close. In a 2025 marathon test by Tom’s Guide, both the Ultra 3 and Fenix 8 Pro tracked well, with the Garmin reading slightly short and the Apple slightly long. A late-September 2026 Tom’s Guide step test found the Series 12 and Forerunner 570 within about 50 to 70 steps of a manual count of 5,440. Neither brand is clearly more accurate day to day.

Training and Health Features

Garmin builds its watches around training analysis. The Fenix 9 ships with Training Readiness, Body Battery, HRV Status, Endurance Score, race predictions, PacePro, offline maps, and triathlon and cycling power metrics. The Forerunner 970 adds Running Tolerance, a Triathlon Coach and an ECG app.

Apple has caught up on health sensing. Series 12 and Ultra 4 share a new Health Sensing System with heart-rate readings every five seconds, a daily Readiness score, hypertension notifications and sleep apnea alerts, plus ECG. Apple’s strength is health screening and a polished interface; Garmin’s is the depth of workout-by-workout and week-by-week coaching.

If you only want pace, distance and heart rate, either works. If you plan blocks of training around load and recovery, Garmin’s tools are broader.

Smart Features, LTE and Safety

This is Apple’s territory. Tom’s Guide calls the Ultra 4 the stronger smartwatch: a much larger app library, easier Apple Pay setup, Siri AI tools and better messaging. Garmin supports payments, music storage and Spotify, but its app selection is more limited.

For safety, the Ultra 4 includes satellite Emergency SOS and messaging, with Apple’s free service period described as two years in reviews. Garmin’s Fenix 9 Pro offers satellite through inReach, which requires a subscription from day one. Apple’s watches also need an iPhone; Garmin works with iPhone and Android.

The Fenix also has a built-in flashlight, while the Ultra uses the display as a light.

Build and Durability

At the top end the two are similar: titanium cases and sapphire crystal. Our guide to titanium vs stainless steel watches explains why that material suits heavy use. The Ultra 4 is 49mm and square with three buttons; the Fenix 9 Pro comes in three round sizes with five buttons, which many people find easier to use with gloves or wet hands.

Below that, Apple’s Series 12 comes in aluminum, titanium or ceramic and rates 50m. Garmin’s Forerunner 570 and 970 are rated 5 ATM and weigh roughly 42 to 56g without a band. If you swim a lot, check what the rating actually allows; our water resistance explainer covers it.

Price

Apple is cheaper at every tier. A Series 12 starts at $399 against $549.99 for the Forerunner 570. The Ultra 4 is $799, while the Fenix 9 Pro starts around $1,100 and rises with inReach. Tom’s Guide put the gap at about $400 between the Ultra 4 and the Fenix 9 Pro with inReach.

Garmin has no subscription for its core features, though inReach satellite service is paid. Apple’s cheapest option, the SE 3, launched at $249 and has no ECG.

Which Athletes Wear Garmin and Apple Watch?

Documented athlete ties favor Garmin. Garmin named seven athletes in its May 2023 announcement as official sponsor of the Professional Triathletes Organisation tour: Rudy von Berg, Magnus Ditlev, Tim O’Donnell, Anne Haug, Patrick Lange, Skye Moench and Laura Siddall. A February 2024 list by The5KRunner counted at least nine sponsored pro triathletes, including Taylor Knibb. These are historical sponsorships and may have changed.

In July 2022 Garmin became official technology sponsor of the Bowerman Track Club through 2023, supplying Forerunner 255 and 955 Solar watches to athletes including Grant Fisher, Elise Cranny and Courtney Frerichs.

Apple’s best-known pro-sport link is the World Surf League. In January 2023 the WSL named Apple Watch its official wearable equipment, giving Championship Tour surfers a Series 8 or Ultra before each heat to read live scores. Beyond that, we found no comparable named-athlete deals, so we do not claim any. Rivals also matter: Coros named Eliud Kipchoge its ambassador in 2020, per Running Insight.
