What Kind of Watch does Bernie Sanders Wear

What Kind of Watch Does Bernie Sanders Wear?

Bernie Sanders, the United States Senator for Vermont raised to fame during the 2016 Presidential election when he eventually lost out to the Democratic nomination for US President to Hillary Clinton.

Known for his strong stance against corporate greed in applying his interpretation of democratic socialism, Sanders rallied a vocal fan-base that continued to find support after the 2016 presidential nomination defeat. Given his strong political views on the influence of corporations and role of social welfare, we thought it would be interesting to find out what watch the Senator chooses to wear.

Bernie Sanders wears a Citizen Eco-Drive

If you were expecting Bernie to wear something super flashy, expensive or exclusive, you’d be rather disappointed as this would definitely run against his public image – which is clearly very important to a politician. Instead, the Citizen Eco-Drive is mostly known for being super practical in that its quartz movement derives its power from the sun (or other light sources), giving it a fantastic power reserve of roughly 6 months after only a couple of days of normal wear.

The stainless steel dress watch is 39mm wide, with a black face, three hand functions, date function at 3 o’clock and water resistance rated to 30m – but certainly don’t take it diving (check out our guide to dive watches for this). Citizen has done a really good job of marketing their watch to the “everyday man” since their founding in 1930’s, something Bernie is no doubt aware of when choosing this watch as it fits his political profile perfectly. The Eco-Drive technology pioneered by Citizen does mean that Bernie can campaign without ever having to worry about changing his watch battery (unlike Donald Trump’s largely ill-received foray into watch manufacturing).

Bernie Sanders Citizen Eco-Drive

The model that Bernie wears (BM0910-57E) is hard to find for retail purchase today. But, that doesn’t really matter as we prefer the style and sleekness of the titanium version of the eco-drive. Both versions of the watch are affordable and stay true to Bernie’s “everyday” appeal.

What Kind of Watch does Bill Gates Wear

What Kind of Watch Does Bill Gates Wear?

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and the second richest man in the world (behind Jeff Bezos, but still in front of long time friend Warren Buffett) wears a remarkably modest watch.

Gates is also well known for his many philanthropic endeavors. In fact, one of the primary reasons he is no longer the richest man in the world is because he has chosen to give away a substantial part of his fortune. He, along with Warren Buffet, also influenced many other mega-rich celebrities and entrepreneurs to donate at least half of their wealth through “the Giving Pledge”. Well played Mr Gates.

Given Mr Gates’ wealth, you’d possibly expect him to be sporting a super exclusive Rolex, Omega or similar. But no, fitting with Mr Gates’ rather conservative lifestyle, he opts to wear what he calls a “$10 watch”. This $10 watch is actually a Casio Illuminator W214H-1AV, and whilst it is certainly an inexpensive watch, you may have to pay a little more than the $10 quoted by Bill (check Amazon for current price).

Check out the video below by Politico where when asked whether the watch he is wearing is similar to a medical watch he is currently speaking about, Bill responds with “no, this is a $10 watch.”

The Casio Illuminator W214H-1AV

Certainly a relatively humble watch for a man of Bill’s stature, the Casio Illuminator W214H-1AV is a digital watch with a 45 mm plastic case and silicon band. The Japanese manufactured Casio is water resistant to 50m and has quartz based movement. Digital features include 3 countdown dials, stopwatch and alarm. For a cheaper watch, it’s certainly well built and durable. Given many ultra-rich decide to show off their wealth with flashy, expensive watches, it’s refreshing that all fans of Bill Gates can “be like Bill” with a very affordable Casio.

The Casio Quartz Diver 200m WR

Clearly a Casio fanboy, Bill has also been spotted wearing another affordable timepiece, the Casio Quartz Diver 200m WR. This dive watch features Japanese Quartz movement, unidirectional bezel (a key feature for a quality diving watch), stainless steel case and a resin band. The face has a black background with white display for markers for the hour indices and bezel markers. The date is displayed at 3 o’clock, includes a screw down crown and is rated to 200m water resistance.

This is a homage watch to the much more expensive and iconic Rolex Submariner and is a very practical watch for those on a budget, but still expect to get wet from time to time and want a durable watch that won’t break under the stresses of an active lifestyle. Whilst more than $10, few would argue that this watch is out of character with Bill’s preference for functionality over glamour. An affordable watch for the most active keyboard warriors, this would be our choice when emulating the style and philosophy of a man worth 90+ Billion.

What kind of watch does Terry Crews wear in Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a popular US sitcom that spices up the regular “cop-show” format with easy watching humor led by Andy Sandberg’s character Jake Peralta. Jake’s good, but often naive intentions land him and his precinct in difficult, and humorous, situations. The show has received praise (and awards) for the way they blend current social issues into the story line, such as the Captain Holt’s sexuality.

Terry Crews (Jeffords) Luminox Navy Seal Colormark

Terry Crews plays Terry Jeffords, a Detective Sergeant with a hard-ass appearance, but has recently become well acquainted with his softer side after being taken off field duty following the birth of his twin daughters. Terry has an annoying habit of referring to himself in the third person, but this gentle giant makes up for it with his leadership and support of his team through thick and thin.

Terry wears a Luminox Navy Seal Colormark throughout the series. Given his bulky, muscular stature, and need to be ready for whatever life as a cop throws at him, the Luminox Navy Seal is a solid choice. With Swiss quartz movement, this watch features a black dial, black unidirectional bezel with white contrasting bezel markers, white hour markers and date displayed at 3 o’clock.  The 200m water resistance is rather expected given the “Navy Seal” model, and whilst I can’t recall an episode where Terry needs to hunt any criminals underwater, he can if duty calls!

I need to eat 10,000 calories a day to maintain muscle mass!

What kind of watch did Elvis Presley wear?

What Kind of Watch Did Elvis Presley Wear

Elvis Presly (@elvis) was a much loved American singer and actor. The “King of Rock and Roll” has been credited by Rolling Stone as ‘single-handedly changed the course of music and culture in the mid-1950s’ . His voice, presence, dancing, clothing and sleek good looks allowed him to reach heights no artist had before him.

Given his impeccable style, it’s not surprising that Elvis held a strong appreciation for watches, boasting an impressive collection, and often using watches as a vehicle for appreciation. There are numerous witness accounts of him giving away watches as presents.

Whilst not an exhaustive list, the below gives you a good overview of the types of watches Elvis adored.

1. Tiffany Omega

Elvis Presley Omega Tiffany CollageThis watch made headlines in 2018 when it sold at auction for $1.8 Milliion – a record for an Omega watch. The watch was a gift to Elvis from his record company, RCA Records, for selling 75 million records. The story goes that Elvis swapped this watch to the seller’s uncle after the uncle expressed admiration for the King’s Tiffany Omega. Elvis, being the generous soul he was, offered to swap it for the uncle’s diamond studded Hamilton.

The watch is an 18K white gold Omega with 44 round cut diamonds on the bezel, Tiffany & Co stamped on the dial, 33mm case and is powered by a manual caliber 510 movement. Engraved on the back is “To Elvis, 75 Million Records, RCA Victor, 12-25-60.”

Can’t afford the $1.8M+ price tag next time this watch comes up for auction? Check out an Omega De Ville or for something more affordable, the Vincero Kairos is worthwhile exploring.

2. Hamilton Ventura

Elvis Presley Hamilton Ventura CollageIt was not out of pure chivalry that Elvis swapped his Tiffany Omega for a Hamilton. He was really quite fond of the asymmetrical design. Most notably wearing a Hamilton Ventura in the 1961 film, Blue Hawaii.  Elvis reportedly owned several Hamilton’s and even gave some away as presents.

Hamilton watches have a polarizing history – you either love the design, or you don’t. The early success of the Ventura has been largely attributed to it being the first battery powered watch that the public was able to afford and the futuristic design by Richard Arbib. Hamilton re-released the Ventura in 2017 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the initial 1957 release. The new Classic Ventura features a case with dimensions 32.3mm x 50.3mm,  quartz movement and a leather strap. Given the relative affordability of the Hamilton Ventura, this watch is within reach for most Elvis fans.

3. Omega Constellation

Elvis Omega Constellation Charlie HodgeElvis was clearly an Omega fan, with the Omega Constellation also featuring prominently during the years he served for the US Army. He was stationed in Germany with friend, and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Charlie Hodge from 1958 to 1960. Charlie often praised and commented Presley on the watch, leading to Presley eventually giving the watch to Charlie as a present. The watch was auctioned in 2012, fetching $52,500.

The watch itself is an Omega Constellation with a black face, “sniper” dial with gold dauphine hands, and gold capping showing the date at 3 o’clock with raised indices and a stainless steel caseback. Movement is controlled by a Cal. 504 manual winding chronometer.

Whilst the King’s Omega Constellation probably won’t be coming up for auction again anytime soon, Omega still makes the Constellation if you share similar tastes to Elvis and want to own one yourself.

4. Rolex Submariner

Elvis Rolex SubmarinerElvis was a true watch aficionado with tastes ranging through all price points. On the more exclusive end was his collection of Rolex’s, including the Rolex Submariner “Big Crown” worn in the 1962 movie Girls, Girls, Girls. There’s numerous scenes in the movie where he proudly sports the Rolex Submariner 6538 “Big Crown”, as shown in the image above. Coincidentally, this watch became famous for being the watch that Sean Connery wore in the first Bond film, Dr No, which also came out in 1962. It’s fitting that such a revered pop icon chose to wear a watch that would also go on to become an icon in its own right.

As the nickname suggests, the watch features an over sized winding crown without any crown guards. Controlled by Rolex’s Calibre 1030 movement, the early Submariner’s dial focuses on simplicity, as they don’t have day or date functions as these only came in later models (1960 onwards).

We aren’t sure what happened to Elvis’s Submariner. Given how popular the “Big Crown” is with watch collectors anyway, adding certified Elvis ownership would certainly have this watch fetching big money at auctions – perhaps even rivaling the $1.8M of the Tiffany Omega. If you want your own Girls, Girls, Girls watch, you can always invest in a modern Rolex Submariner, or for something more affordable, a Casio MDV106-1A is a solid, practical option, or you can check out or article devoted to Rolex Submariner homages for more choice.

Selena Gomez G-Shock

Selena Gomez wears a CASIO

Selena Gomez is a famous singer, actress, role model and one of the most inspiring celebrities I’ve seen perform live. Her style is a unique mix of sexy, sporty, chic and sweet. Her fighting spirit is as tough as the CASIO G-Shock Watch she wore in the song “Hands to Myself” and the elegant classy spirit is reflected in the Rolex Day-Date II Oyster 41mm.

Selena is inspired by the work she does as a UNICEF campaign she does to raise money for children and inspires everyone to be beautiful on the inside and the outside every day of their life.

Selena wears a Black G-Shock S Series Women’s watch

Selena Gomez wears a CASIO Black G-Shock S Series Women’s Resin Watch GMDS6900-1 in her third chart topping hit “Hands to Myself” from her second studio album Revival, where she comes out with a badass, gothic, sexy vibe wearing some sexy lingerie and smokey eyes. The whole ensemble represents the sporty, sexy and sensual side of Selena, and plays on playful and vivid imaginations. The song features Selena as a stalker to a famous Hollywood actor, enacting her desires and fantasies. In the music video, Selena breaks into the house after checking the watch, that contrasts beautifully with the lace that looks like a tattoo on her skin. Check out the video for yourself:

Selena Gomez - Hands To Myself

The watch complements and contrasts the sexy black lingerie by Giorgio Armani and adds to the finesse of Selena’s style in the music video.

We love the understated smouldering look that she sports in the video and the concept that she represents in the video resonates with every woman’s fantasies on celebrity crushes.

Check out Selena Gomez for more details on her work.

Why we like the G-Shock S Series Women’s watch

The watch is designed especially for a woman’s small wrists. It is not excessively bulky and fits easily onto my wrists. The watch comes with a 2-year warranty which I like. It holds up pretty well after all the rough treatment it has gone through with the clumsy handling that has happened often enough. The watch would be a good choice if you have a tendency to have an active lifestyle. I knocked it into a wall by mistake once, and not a scratch on it. It is embarrassing to admit but an analog watch takes too much time for me to read. This digital watch has a perfect size dial and display.

Summary

At first glance, the watch may look masculine, especially on pictures available on various websites. But we don’t think these do the watch justice as you can’t fully appreciate the beautiful glitter effect embedded into the black that pairs well with the silver buckle and makes it look feminine. This beauty is gorgeous on the outside and tough on the inside. Just like Selena Gomez.

What watch did Ernest Hemingway wear?

Ernest Hemingway wore a Rolex Oyster Perpetual.

When it comes to Ernest Hemingway, the average person will only see him as the writer of, “The Old Man and The Sea”. However, he was an incredibly complex person that traveled all around the world, went to parties, was an amateur boxer, and an alcohol connoisseur.

As is true with many artists and honest story tellers, Hemingway was a bit of a tortured soul. So many of his writings are incredibly interesting because they tell the stories that reflect the complicated and difficult nature of being human. He was a heavy drinker and lived a life of chaos much of the time. As he is also known for tragically ending his own life, it is easy to see that there were not many stable things in his life.

Hemingway’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Leather - Ernest Hemingway

There were two things that were very consistent for Ernest Hemingway. The first was waking up and writing. He was known to write every morning as soon as he could. The other thing that was incredibly steady was his Rolex Oyster Perpetual. This was the watch that he wore almost every day. It was a classy steel watch that was the steady timekeeper for the man with a life that was all over the place.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a beautiful steel watch (or “Oystersteel”) with a stainless-steel band. However, Hemingway’s Rolex Oyster that he was often pictured with is from the 1950s and is 18 carat gold and has a leather band.

Hemingway admired the Rolex Oyster Perpetual so much that it found its way into his novel Across the River and Into the Trees when he compared the watch to the human heart:

“Do you think it breaks for me? If so, I would come and simply be with you and care for you.”
“It’s just a muscle,” the Colonel said. “Only it is the main muscle. It works as perfectly as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The trouble is you cannot send it to the Rolex representative when it goes wrong. When it stops, you just do not know the time. You’re dead.”

Here Hemingway is equating the accuracy of an Oyster Perpetual to the human heart. But in the case of a Rolex, it can be fixed if it needs to be repaired. This was not a product placement, Hemingway had a genuine fondness for Rolexes and wasn’t afraid to show it.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Specs

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is one of the iconic watches of the 20th century. The “Oyster” refers to the proud water resistance heritage – indeed it was the first waterproof watch to be produced. Rolex heavily marketed its waterproofing qualities after the first woman to successfully cross the English Channel, Mercedes Gleitze, wore an Oyster during her achievement. This proved to be a great endorsement and Rolex still uses this in their marketing material.

The Oyster Perpetual is Rolex’s entry level model. Its classic design doesn’t come with features such as date or day and comes exclusively in stainless steel. This is a great watch if you’re thinking of entering into the world of Rolex.

The modern day 36mm Oyster has the following specs:

  • Size: 36mm – Suitable for both men and women
  • Reference #: 116000
  • Movement: Automatic – Calibre 3130 self-winding mechanical
  • Case material: Stainless Steel 904L
  • Bracelet material: Stainless steel (“Oystersteel”) with Oysterclasp fasteners
  • Water resistance: 100m (330 ft)
  • Power reserve: 48 hours
  • Face colors: Black, silver, red grape, white grape, blue & white

Hemingway’s Rolex Bubbleback

Rolex Bubbleback - Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway has also been spotted wearing a Rolex Bubbleback. The Bubbleback was the pre-cursor to the Oyster Perpetual, and was one of the first automatic watches available when it launched in 1933. Getting its name from its distinctive protruding “bubbleback” case, Rolex decided to house the large auto-rotor movement in a larger case rather than increase the watch’s overall size.

Hemingway’s Bubbleback probably dates from the late 1940’s.

Hemingway’s other watches

While he was most commonly seen wearing his Rolexes, he also had several interesting pocket watches. This seems even more incredibly fitting for Hemingway, the cigar smoking, rum sipping, bull fighter. Nothing says, “intellectual writer”, like the Hamilton pocket watch that he was given by Ava Gardner for his 55th birthday. Obviously, there is no need to constantly check the time if you are in the depths of writing for the first half of the day and chasing experiences in the evening. That is why a classy old pocket watch would be perfect.

There are so many different things about Hemingway that you could dissect and try to understand. The complications are what made his work great, but also lead to his unfortunate end and his misery. One thing that he could count on was his steady Rolex Oyster Perpetual, but even that could not calm the tides for this old man and his internal sea.

What kind of watch did Felix Baumgartner wear?

For those that are intrigued by a man pushing himself to the limits of what is thought possible, it would be impossible to forget what Felix Baumgartner did on October 14, 2012. This fateful Sunday was the day that this skydiving master jumped from the stratosphere in a helium balloon, breaking the sound barrier without vehicular power for the first time in human history.

Through it all, this amazing feat was accomplished while wearing the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th stainless steel watch. As you can imagine, it takes an incredible watch to be able to accompany a man on such an incredible mission, so why was this the watch for Baumgartner.

Considering that Baumgartner was launching himself from a space capsule that was inside a helium balloon, from an altitude of 39, 045 meters, and at a temperature of -62 degrees Celsius, the watch had to be durable. The Zenith watch had to be able to endure extreme conditions to be the right one.

The Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th is a beautiful watch, but might not be affordable for some. It’s usually priced at , for a very good reason. It obviously brings all of the classic features that you need in a watch, such as easy readability, a date window, a durable and comfortable band, and a secure stainless steel buckle. The big difference with this watch comes in with its sapphire crystal protection on the front side that makes it incredibly durable and in addition, looks beautiful.

The stainless steel case makes this watch able to endure intense conditions, like the ones Baumgartner faced while falling at a rate of over 360 mph. What makes this watch so striking, is that after this freefall, it was working absolutely perfectly once it arrived on the ground. A watch that can endure that amount of drastic change in pressure, temperature, acceleration, and altitude, is absolutely incredible.

With a case thickness of 10 or 14 mm, this solid case backed watch is prepared to take on the most extreme of adventures without sacrificing on style. As with any high-end watch, the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th is water resistant up to 100 meters, which makes it great for adventurers that are headed into the water as well.

With scratch resistant sapphire on the face to protect it, there is really nothing more you can ask for from a watch, but this one provides a power reserve of 50 hours as well. If you are looking for a high-end watch that can provide dependability in intense and extreme conditions, this is most certainly one of the best, and most historic options available.

What Kind of Watch Does Conor McGregor Wear?

Conor McGregor is an Irish-born professional mixed martial artist who is well known for fighting in the UFC.  McGregor is one of only two people in UFC history to win a contest at both the featherweight and welterweight levels. McGregor is a very impressive individual who has carved out a great deal of success for himself at such a young age. He is also quite well known for his extensive watch collection, which is evident by a quick peruse of his Instagram account (@thenotoriousmma)

1. Rolex Sky Dweller

One of the watches he can be seen frequently wearing is the Rolex Sky Dweller. The Sky Dweller is a beautiful watch put out by Rolex featuring their Oyster Perpetual movement. One of the key selling points of the watch is it’s simplicity. It features several complications, including a date display and a monthly calendar, and has several functions including 24 hour time and a second time zone setting – functions which can by found by adjusting the bezel. However, as beautiful as the Sky Dweller is, it is a $40,000 watch. This puts the watch out of the price range of the average person. Luckily there are plenty of great alternatives!

If you’re looking for a watch that achieves the look and feel of the Sky Dweller without the enormous price tag, then we recommend the Citizen Eco Drive Stainless. The watch by Citizen is a Stainless Steel case with a mineral composite crystal and Japanese Quartz movement. While it is a battery powered watch, the battery should last for quite a while and very easily changed.

The best part about the citizen? It comes in at a very reasonable $89.99, making it an affordable alternative to the Sky Dweller. And while there definitely is a notable difference between the two watches, if you’re looking for a quality and affordable watch that captures the feel of the Sky Dweller, this Citizen Eco-Drive won’t let you down.

Check out the Citizen Eco-Drive on Amazon

2. Rolex Day Date

Also among Conor’s impressive collection is his super suave Ice Blue Platinum Rolex Day-Date that he wore in the lead-up to his fight with Mayweather. The platinum version of the quintessential Rolex Day-Date packs a large punch (pun intended… sorry) in both performance and aesthetics. Combining classic features of the Rolex Day-Date Oyster collection such as 100m water resistance (perfect to use as a dive watch), robust perpetual movement of the Rolex Calibre 3255 (automatic), full day of the week displayed at 12 (available in 26 languages!) and a 26 hour power reserve. The platinum version features an elegant ice blue face, and is considerably heavier than the other metal versions of the Rolex Day-Date.

Not getting $70 Million for a fight like McGregor and therefore not necessarily prepared to invest in a Rolex? Of course, there are alternatives. Especially given that Rolex is the most copied watch brand on the planet. A great alternative to the Rolex Day-Date is the Orient “President” Classic. This homage to the Rolex Day-Date features a 36mm case, full day of the week at 12, date magnifier, sapphire crystal and indices. Controlled by a very reliable in house automatic movement with two way winding clutch. Don’t be fooled, this is not a cheap Rolex knock-off, but a quality AND affordable watch in its own right.
