Not only does a police officer’s watch need to be durable and waterproof, it needs to be comfortable and very easy to read, quickly.
After consulting with some friends of mine who are cops, one watch in particular kept coming up as a particular favorite. Enter Luminox’s Navy Seal Colormark 3050 Series.
When the United States’ Department of The Navy was looking for a new watch to outfit their special warfighters, they turned to Luminox to create a watch that was durable, comfortable, light weight, and – most importantly – able to be read easily in any condition, including under water and in low light.
Luminox answered the call with their Navy Seal Colormark 3050 Series, a watch famous for using tritium inserts, instead of phosphorescent inserts. The difference being tritium is a radioactive isotope that slowly decays over time.
As the tritium decays, it releases electrons that interact with the phosphorus coating of the inserts, exciting them on a molecular level and causing a bright luminescence.
This enables the watch to be easily read in a number of circumstances including under water and in total darkness. And the luminescence of the watch is not predicated on it “charging” in the sunlight, absorbing natural radiation to re-release, because it has its own radiation source.
The watch also has other features that a police officer may find useful, such as an easy to spot date display at the 3 o’clock position and large Arabic numerals for easy reading, and a unidirectional rotating bezel.
The Luminox Navy Seal Colormark has a protected winding crown and runs on a quartz movement – so it does require a battery to operate the engine of the watch.
It is waterproof to 200 meters (660 feet, 20 BAR) so it is safe for swimming and diving despite the screw-on case back (which is sealed with durable gaskets. The case of the watch is a unique carbon compound that is 44mm in diameter, making it both light and durable.
The watch’s strap is a thick silicone rubber – comfortable strap for the wearer that can also stand up to some abuse. The crystal is a tough mineral compound to strike a balance between durability and affordability.
Not a big fan of the Luminox Navy Seal Colormark? We’ve included 4 other options in our article Best Watches for Law Enforcement Officers.
The reason this watch surprises many people, is because Denzel is playing a pilot, so it might be assumed that he is going to be wearing something more expensive and luxurious. Despite the fact that he is not strapped for cash, Whitaker is wearing a rather inexpensive Timex watch that is not too flashy. The watch itself is black, has a black strap and has the look of the classic, durable watch.
The Timex Expedition Rugged Analog T49831 is a watch that you can find easily that provides incredible style, durability, and performs well, but it is also incredibly affordable. This men’s watch from Timex is perfect for anybody that needs a watch that can endure tough work or spending time in the great outdoors. With its clear numbering on the outside for every 5 minute/second mark, and all of the even hours marked in bold white, you will never have any trouble checking the time.
With a digital date window to help you keep track of the day, luminous hands to help you see what time it is even in the darker lighting, and even more so the indiglo night light keeping it visible at all times. With a black resin case, a black resin strap, and a crisp buckle clasp, you can always count on it to be comfortable and durable under any circumstances.
The strap for the Timex Expedition Rugged Analog T49831 is 10” long and provides a nice fit for almost everyone. Its features include being water resistant for up to 50 meters, so it is great for swimming, or any other water related activities. I am sure that Denzel’s character did not want to think about landing a plane on water, but if he had to swim, he would have been prepared.
As was mentioned before, this watch is great for the adventures that life brings. One of the best ways that this watch lends itself to the person on the go is that beyond its durability, it also has great readability. With large numbering, a clear hour hand, minute hand, and second hand it has one of the easiest analog displays for anyone to read no matter what they are doing. Taking it one step further, this incredible and affordable watch is just as easy to read at night. Providing you with an indiglo night light and luminous hands, you can perfectly read this watch at night. This easy readability in the dark was probably another thing that a pilot like Whitaker enjoyed, and if you know that character, the easy readability was a must!
One thing that has not been mentioned yet is the rotating bezel feature on the Timex Expedition Rugged Analog T49831. This is great for anyone that needs to keep track of short periods of time easily, and with the simple analog reads on this watch you can do this easier than ever. It was likely a great feature for a pilot that needs to keep track of the time intervals involved in a flight. Since the watch is also water resistant for up to 50 meters, you might like the rotating bezel to help keep swimming times as well. This watch is clearly a wonderful and reliable option for someone looking for a clean and professional looking watch. The most surprising thing about the Timex Expedition Rugged Analog T49831 is that it is so incredibly affordable. You can find this watch for $32.00 and there is nothing better in the world of watches than finding one that performs at a high level and is not going to make your wallet too light. This watch is perfect for pretty much any budget, and because it is so incredibly durable, you are not going to have to replace it anytime soon.
There are few things that are more chaotic than a nursing shift. Whether it is in the ER or in a pediatrician’s office, finding the right watch to keep track of time, while being able to endure all of the tasks you have throughout the day can be difficult.
A great watch for a nurse starts with readability. When you are in the middle of a shift, you want to be able to look down, see the time, and get back to what you need to be doing. Small numbers, artsy designs that make reading the watch difficult, and other factors can be frustrating for you during the day. To find the right watch, you want easy to read numbers, a clear line for each minute within the hour, and if it had a digital reading as well, that would be great.
Nurses are also required to wash their hands constantly, as well as work with liquids and bodily fluids. A water-resistant watch is a must because no nurse has time to take their watch on and off for every single wash. Having a water-resistant watch also helps you to easily clean your watch, another important part of a nurse’s day. The field of medical care is a messy place, so being able to rinse off your water-resistant watch while washing your hands is incredibly helpful. So, what are the best watches out there, that meet these requirements and provide a comfortable option for nurses to wear?
The G-Shock is also incredibly durable, which is important for nurses on the job. It has a scratch resistant mineral dial window, is water resistant for up to 200 meters, and is shock resistant to avoid damage when dropped. The combination of scratch resistant material and water-resistant protection for the watch makes it great for the chaotic situations that come up throughout the day.
This watch is easy to clean, easy to read, and it is completely water resistant (unless you are planning a deep-sea dive), so it checks all the boxes for a nurse in need of a suitable watch. It is also a fairly priced watch with options available at !
Another great feature on this watch is the stainless-steel material. Having an affordable, durable, and easy to clean material on your watch is important, and this watch has it all. The dial window is made of scratch-resistant mineral so that you do not have to worry about the different times it gets dinged against a door or shelf throughout the day. Its resin band material is also incredibly durable and easy to clean while providing a comfortable fit throughout the day.
As always, as a nurse, you need a watch that is water resistant. With a 330 ft., water-resistant depth, this watch can endure all of the various liquids that will inevitably come its way throughout the day. With the combination of water resistance, stainless steel, and a resin band, you know that you can safely clean your watch after it gets dirty, which is bound to happen.
Conor McGregor is an Irish-born professional mixed martial artist who is well known for fighting in the UFC. McGregor is one of only two people in UFC history to win a contest at both the featherweight and welterweight levels. McGregor is a very impressive individual who has carved out a great deal of success for himself at such a young age. He is also quite well known for his extensive watch collection, which is evident by a quick peruse of his Instagram account (@thenotoriousmma)
The best part about the citizen? It comes in at a very reasonable $89.99, making it an affordable alternative to the Sky Dweller. And while there definitely is a notable difference between the two watches, if you’re looking for a quality and affordable watch that captures the feel of the Sky Dweller, this Citizen Eco-Drive won’t let you down.Check out the Citizen Eco-Drive on Amazon
Also among Conor’s impressive collection is his super suave Ice Blue Platinum Rolex Day-Date that he wore in the lead-up to his fight with Mayweather. The platinum version of the quintessential Rolex Day-Date packs a large punch (pun intended… sorry) in both performance and aesthetics. Combining classic features of the Rolex Day-Date Oyster collection such as 100m water resistance (perfect to use as a dive watch), robust perpetual movement of the Rolex Calibre 3255 (automatic), full day of the week displayed at 12 (available in 26 languages!) and a 26 hour power reserve. The platinum version features an elegant ice blue face, and is considerably heavier than the other metal versions of the Rolex Day-Date. Not getting $70 Million for a fight like McGregor and therefore not necessarily prepared to invest in a Rolex? Of course, there are alternatives. Especially given that Rolex is the most copied watch brand on the planet. A great alternative to the Rolex Day-Date is the Orient “President” Classic. This homage to the Rolex Day-Date features a 36mm case, full day of the week at 12, date magnifier, sapphire crystal and indices. Controlled by a very reliable in house automatic movement with two way winding clutch. Don’t be fooled, this is not a cheap Rolex knock-off, but a quality AND affordable watch in its own right. Check out the Orient “President” Classic on Amazon
Conor simply has too many other watches to mention without this turning into a massive article. So, I’ve just included some of his own images and videos from Insta below.
Chris Kyle wore a Casio G-Shock.
Chris Kyle was a U.S. Navy SEAL sniper with SEAL Group 3. He served 4 tours overseas for the United States and is currently the deadliest sniper in American history with at least 150 kills to his name. Kyle was known in the region as “The Devil of Ramadi”, and known to his comrades in the U.S. armed forces as “The Legend”.
Kyle, and friend Chad Littlefield, were murdered by a fellow veteran suffering from PTSD on February 2nd, 2013. His autobiography, American Sniper, was adapted by Clint Eastwood into a biopic starring Bradley Cooper.
Along with his G-Shock, Chris Kyle also mentions his Rolex Submariner in his autobiography. He only wore his G-Shock on active duty:
‘On my wrist, I’d wear a G-Shock watch. The black watch and its rubber wristband have replaced Rolex Submariners as standard SEAL equipment. (A friend of mine, who thought it was a shame the tradition died, recently got me one. I still feel a little strange wearing a Rolex, but it is a throwback to the frogmen who came before me.)’
We’ve also written about Rolex Submariner homage watches if you’re after the iconic Submariner look minus the steep price tag.
The watches these days are digital in their complications, but analog in their time display. Casio claims the battery life is 2 years, and some even come equipped with Tough Solar chargers to automatically recharge.
G-Shock watches all include automatic atomic clock synchronization, and most will now automatically adjust to whatever timezone you’re located in using radio waves and local sources. The “G” in G-Shock stands for ‘Gravitational’ -- the watch was designed in the early 80s to be able to withstand mechanical shock and heavy vibration.
As such, today’s G-Shock watch is water resistant to 20 BAR, and can withstand a rather high fall (at least 20 feet that we could find, possibly more with newer versions of the watch).
The best part about the G-Shock is that it is incredibly affordable given the engineering that has gone into them. There’s a variety of G-Shocks with a range of different features, starting from around for a basic G-Shock like this DW6900.
Chris would have worn a a G-Shock DW6600, which was the standard watch worn by Navy Seals after the Rolex Submariner, until 2011. Since then, Navy Seals have worn a variety of different watches.
We’ve featured the G-Shock G-Shock DW6900 in this article as it’s the closest available model to the DW6600.
Bradley Cooper wore a G-Shock DW 6600 in the movie adaptation of American Sniper. They got this part of the movie dead on as we’ve already mentioned it is historically accurate.
Around 2011, several rappers, including Eminem, started wearing the watch and vaulted it into the mainstream consciousness. As such, you can find them in your mall or local jeweler. You can also find some at a pawn shop.
Check out the following video for a glimpse of the G-Shock’s toughness:
A lot of times we talk about cool or incredible watches that celebrities wear, and while we’d love to own one, they’re priced out of our reach. Not everyone is going to be able to put down $100,000 on a Richard Mille or $50,000 on an Audemars Piguet. Sometimes you need a good daily wear watch that won’t break the bank, but will last you a long time and stand up to the abuse a daily dress watch gets put through.
That’s where MVMT Watches comes in. MVMT (pronounced “Movement“) is a small watch company founded in 2013 by two young men (Jake & Kramer) who dropped out of college to, as they put it, “reinvent the watch industry”. Their goal was to make smart, stylish, and functional watches without all of the markup that most watches have.
After a very successful IndieGoGo campaign, they launched MVMT, stylish and minimalist markups sold direct from the manufacturer. Because the watches are only sold online and not sold through high-end retailers like other watch brands, they are able to sell the watches for very close to cost – in most cases between $95 and $150 per watch.
MVMT Watches are high quality and durable watches that make for a good daily wear without being something you would worry about scuffing or catching. The watch featured below is a 45mm watch from their Classic line.MVMT watches will be Quartz movement watches, which means that they are going to be very accurate and won’t lose seconds like automatic watches. The downside is that you have to change a battery every so often. Aesthetically, it means the second hand will ‘tick’ instead of ‘sweep’ the dial.
MVMT watches feature a mineral glass composite crystal. This is a good middle ground between a high end sapphire crystal and a cheap plastic one, allowing them to save costs but not sacrifice quality. As I can tell, MVMT watches are generally all going to be water resistant to 3BAR, which means you can wear it in the rain, but you shouldn’t swim or shower with the watch.
If you’re looking for an affordable watch option, but don’t want to shell out $500, $1,000 or more, then you should check out MVMT Watches. Their classic line is available on Amazon (here), and even more options are available on their website (here). They have watches in a few stores around the US, but it would be better to just order online and let them ship it to you.
Barack Obama wears a black Jorg Gray Chronograph 6500 watch.
Barack Obama served as the 44th president of the United States of America, and was the first African American president the country has elected.
Obama has worn the Jorg Gray since 2007, when it was gifted to him by three of his Secret Service staff. In honor of his historic achievement, Jorg Gray created a special, one of a kind edition of the 6500 with buffalo leather straps and a commemorative back-plate for the president to wear.
Unless you have access to the Secret Service shop (wouldn’t that be awesome), the closest you can get is the Men’s JG6500 Analog, which is an exact replica of the president’s watch, down to the leather and stitching, but without any of the secret service notations. The following image shows the difference on the dials between the two models:
Most pictures of Barack Obama since he took office show him wearing the JG6500 Analog. Although this isn’t the only type of watch the President has been seen wearing:
